Sit, Stay, Good Dog:
Simple Steps to Training Your Problem Puppy . . .
(Without Losing Your Mind)
Training your pet can be a rewarding . . . and unnerving. Of course,
some puppies are quick learners. Within a day or two, they get the
hang of things and are off and running to bigger and better things . .
.
And then there are normal puppies.
Those that tinkle in our shoes, chew on our ankles and occasionally
poop in the neighbor’s begonias. But how do you take an average puppy
and turn him into a trained little genius? Just follow these simple
steps for problem-puppy training made easy.
Don’t Make the “Time” Mistake
When it comes to training, it would seem as though the longer you did
it the more it would sink in. But with puppies this just is not the
case. A normal training session should last no longer than fifteen
minutes at a time. If your puppy begins to show signs of disinterest,
give him a break and try again later.
Don’t Take Too Long to Punish
When your dog is in “no-no” territory, you must punish them
immediately. A puppy has a very short memory span. If you see him
using the bathroom indoors, immediately say “No!” If you discover an
accident after the fact, he won’t know what you are scolding him for.
Praise Until You Feel Silly
When your dog gets something right . . . reward him. If you are
praising puppy the right way – you’ll feel ridiculous. If you’re not
feeling silly just yet . . . up the praise a little. Just like
infants, puppies can relate excessive happiness back to a good deed
much easier than with a simple short “good boy”.
Enlist Help
If you’ve tried everything and your puppy is still having lots of
trouble behaving, call up a local pet trainer. Many pet stores offer
economical classes that won’t break the bank and will still get the
job done.
When
it comes to training your puppy, remember that all dogs learn at their
own pace. Sometimes “problem puppies” aren’t really problem puppies at
all. They are simply normal dogs whose owner’s have above average
expectations. Remember, if your puppy doesn’t learn right away this
doesn’t make you a failure . . . it makes you human and simply means
that you just need to exercise a little patience until you see
results.
